Do's and Don'ts of Styling Your Wardrobe for Your Session

After booking your session, you may immediately begin to wonder “But what do I wear?!” Wardrobe can play a prominent role in the way your final images turn out. However, with the right tips in mind, this is nothing to stress over! This can be a FUN step in preparing for your session! Here are some of my favorite, simple pieces of advice to help you finalize your outfits for your session:

DO- Choose a Coordinating Color Palette, DON’T “Match”

This is the first step in the process of styling for your session. Instead of “matching” one another by wearing the exact same color, choose a color palette of 4 to 5 colors that complement one another and style each individual in varying shades of that palette. When choosing a color palette, think about the location of your session and envision a color palette that complements the setting. Pinterest is a great place to assist you with this! Try searching “neutral color palettes”, “earthy color palettes”, or “beach color palettes” until you find one that catches your eye and works well with the location of your session!

DO- Utilize Patterns and Texture, DON’T-wear clothing with large Logos or Characters

This tip will help you achieve a timeless look to your images. Sticking to a combination of patterns, solids and textures within your color palette will help give your images more visual interest and dimension! Large logos or characters (specifically for littles) can be distracting in the image and may not be something you wish to hang up in your home forever. Different patterns you can try include stripes, shapes or florals. You can also add various textures like lace, corduroy, muslin, fur or wool. Be true to your personal style and remember that comfort should also be a priority for a more enjoyable session for everyone! If you dress your child in a super scratchy or itchy fabric, they may be too uncomfortable in it.

DO- Accessorize, DON’T- Be Afraid to Be Creative with Your Style

This is your time to shine! Add that personal flare to your images by pulling out that thrifty hat, sporting that daring leather jacket or adorning yourself with those jewelry pieces that you love! Whether it’s suspenders for him or the trendy hat for you, your wardrobe should feel like you. Don’t force something that’s not your style and don’t be afraid to rock something that is!

Styling your wardrobe is as simple as that! Don’t allow it to intimidate you. If you find yourself struggling with where to begin, start with your piece first and choose your loved ones wardrobes to coordinate with it! Make it a creative experience that adds to the fun of having your photos done! Scour Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration. Think about the specific “feel” you want for your images. Do you want them to feel romantic, edgy, timeless, or fun? Then base your wardrobe off of that!

I am here to help, so don’t be afraid to message me with questions and even photos of what you are thinking about wearing! Place everything out on the bed together to get an overall visual of how all the pieces look together. Happy planning!
